In search of multiple interpretations of Act One in The Twelfth Night

1) Is Olivia afraid to find love after what happened with her first lover?

2) Is commiting suicide the only way of escaping a marriage?

3) Is Olivia afraid that the suitors just want her because of social class and not her personality?

4) Did William Shakespeare fictionalize how love should be?

5)Is there a time in the book, that the suitors realize that it is not just about the social class but the personality and character of a woman?

6) Do you think that Olivia will fall in love?

4 comments:

  1. 1. Olivia is virginal and unattached. Her remorse is over the death of her brother.
    2. What line suggests that Olivia is suicidal?
She is most probably speaking hyperbolically.
    3. Yes
    4. Why would a writer fictionalize love? Do you know when love became a fit subject for poetry? What can you assume about a culture that glorifies and/or fictionalizes love?
    5. Not a book -- a play. The question is unclear.
    6. Sure. Why not?

  2. 1. Olivia is saddened over the death of her brother and currently has no one to really watch over her. Yes, there is her uncle but he might not have her best interests at heart.
    2. I'm pretty sure that there is a better way to solve that problem. Where exactly is that mentioned?
    3. She most likely does believe that the suitors just want her status but that she has not given any of them a chance to prove themselves to her.
    4. You can not fictionalize love. Love is what you make it and everyone has their own view on it. What one person says does not mean that all will agree with him or her.
    5. I am not really sure.
    6. Olivia has fallen in love. Unfortunately it is with a person who is not who he/she really seems.
